Central Nova MP Sean Fraser has been named to the federal cabinet.

Fraser was sworn in on Tuesday as the minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship. He is part of an expanded cabinet that contains 38 members.

Fraser was elected for a third time in Central Nova, once a stronghold for the former Progressive Conservative Party and the current Conservative Party of Canada.

He was previously pursuing a legal career before he first contested the riding in 2015 and secured more than half the votes. He won comfortable pluralities in subsequent elections in 2019 and last summer.

He was parliamentary secretary to the finance minister before securing a full-fledged cabinet post for the first time.

Fraser’s appointment as a Nova Scotian MP coincides with a strong inflow of immigration to the province and Central Nova in recent years.
