The New Glasgow Regional Police is commending a group of young people’s response to discovering a shotgun in the town’s west side.
Police responded on Dec. 31 to a report that a group of youth located a shotgun on a nearby trail near Birch Street. The group immediately alerted an adult who called police.
Preliminary work indicated there is no threat to public safety and no one was injured.
“Locating any firearm in a public place by the public, is concerning, and in this case, it was located by a group of youth, “said Const. Ken Macdonald in a recent press release. “The person or persons responsible for disposing this firearm could have been responsible for serious injury and or death.”
The young people’s response was vital to a safe outcome, Macdonald said in the release.
“The quick actions by the youth to report the firearm to a responsible adult, who immediately called police, prevented any serious life-threatening injuries,” he said.
Police have seized the shotgun and the investigation is continuing to determine any connections to other ongoing police investigations.
