A man from Pictou Landing First Nation has been charged in a historical sexual assault investigation.

The sexual assault is alleged to have happened approximately 15 years ago.

The Pictou District RCMP received a complaint on Aug. 13 of a sexual assault occurring on New Year's Day roughly 15 years ago. The victim was either 11 or 12 at the time.

A police release says the victim went to bed following New Year's Eve celebrations, however was awoken by a man, who was 21 or 22 at the time, and sexually assaulted.

On Oct. 28, police arrested Gary Daniel Denny, 35, of Pictou Landing First Nation, without incident. He's been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference, and is to appear in provincial court in Pictou on Dec. 13, 9:30 a.m. He's been released from custody on conditions.

The Pictou District RCMP, with assistance from the General Investigative Section, is leading the investigation, which is continuing.
