A 45-year-old Cape Breton man is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday after a break-in Thursday at a home in Abercrombie.
Pictou District RCMP charged Kevin Walters, of Sydney Mines, with break, enter and commit. He appeared in Pictou provincial court on Friday and was remanded into custody until his upcoming court appearance.
Police say charges of flight from police, impaired operation of a conveyance and impaired operation of a conveyance equal to, or more than, the legal alcohol limit will be laid at a later date.
Police officers learned that a man broke into the home at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday and drove away in a black Volkswagen Beetle that had been stored in a garage.
A member of the RCMP Northeast Traffic Services located the driver of the vehicle at about the same time travelling on Hwy. 104 near James River. The police began a traffic stop but, although the driver initially pulled over, he fled prior to the RCMP officer being able to speak with him.
A second Northeast Traffic Services member located the vehicle on Hwy. 104 near Exit 31 in Addington Forks. The officer initiated a traffic stop but the driver refused to stop.
Police followed the driver where they exited at Exit 33 in Beech Hill. The driver continued on Beech Hill Road and began to slow down when it appeared the vehicle was suffering from mechanical issues. By this time, an RCMP Police Dog Service team had arrived in the area. The team successfully disabled the vehicle and arrested the driver.
The man displayed signs of impairment and provided a breath sample, which resulted in a "fail."
Police took the man to the Antigonish detachment. The man's breath samples there were more than twice the legal limit. Police then took the man to the cells in Pictou County where he was held until his first court appearance.
