A group of more than 30 people received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal at a ceremony last weekend.
Premier Tim Houston presented the medals to the 33 recipients Saturday in Westville. Among the recipients were a fire and police chief, community volunteers and activists, and town councillors.
“This acknowledgement today is our way of saying thank you,” said Premier Houston.
The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia’s website describes the medal as “a tangible way for the province to honour the Queen’s service while also honouring the significant contributions and achievements made by residents.”
The medal was created to honour community members who have dedicated their time to helping others whether through their work or generous contributions to their community. In total, 5,000 Nova Scotians will receive medals.
“You reflect what it best means to be Canadian,” Houston said to the recipients. “What it best means to be Nova Scotian.”
Among the recipients was Brenda Sterling-Goodwin, who was awarded for her tireless efforts to advocate and increase education about Lyme disease since 2006 when she first began experiencing symptoms. She continues to ensure her voice is heard, and the voices of other Lyme patients.
“When I heard, I was in shock,” said Sterling-Goodwin. “I’m appreciative of them and being recognized for my Lyme advocacy.”
A reception for all recipients followed the presentation.
Recipients of the medal were councillors Andrew Thompson and Chester Dewer, Allan Keefe, Arlene MacGregor, Clyde Macdonald, Corey Hartling, Dean Robertson, Eileen MacKinnon, Faye Kinney, Fran Wyman, George Sutherland, Brenda Sterling-Goodwin, Graham MacNeil, Heather Stewart, Joe MacDonald, John Kennedy, Marvyn Robbins, Michael Conway, Paul Schnurr, Raymond Stewart, Robert (Bob) Rogers, Samuel Graham, Shaun MacLaughlin, Sue Uhren, Tina Bannerman, Tyler MacLane, William (Bill) Chase Sr., Tyson Bowen (posthumously), Westville Fire Chief Ken Dunn, Westville Fire Deputy Chief Tom Steele, Westville Police Chief Howard Dunbar and Const.
