With the winter weather upon us, it’s a great time to snuggle up with a good book, magazine or movie, or head outside for some winter fun – and try snowshoeing.
Thanks to a partnership with Active Pictou County, we have numerous sets of snowshoes for all ages and sizes available for borrowing. Another great outdoor opportunity to enjoy this time of year is stargazing due to the extra hours of dark nights (all the better to see the starry skies). Wish you had a telescope to try? Thanks to a partnership with St. FX University’s physics department, we have several small portable Celestron telescopes you can borrow. All you need is your library card, and that’s free too. The library has a number of informative books and magazines about astronomy and exploring the great outdoors.
The month of February brings many reasons to celebrate, including African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. This year’s African Heritage Month provincial theme is Seas of Struggle – African Peoples from Shore to Shore, and outlines the struggles of people of African descent forced from the shores of Africa to the shores of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia has 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities with a long, deep and complex history dating back over 200 years. African Heritage Month provides another opportunity to celebrate our culture, legacy, achievements and contributions of African Nova Scotians, past and present.
All our library locations will offer a special kente cloth-inspired Take & Make home crafting kit to encourage children to create a woven paper craft with colours and symbols of their own choosing.
The New Glasgow Library will offer a public screening of the NFB documentary film, John Ware Reclaimed, on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. The film follows filmmaker Cheryl Foggo on her quest to re-examine the mythology surrounding John Ware, the Black cowboy who settled in Alberta before the turn of the 20th century. Foggo’s research uncovers who this iconic figure might have been and what his legacy means in terms of anti-Black racism, both past and present.

Coming up in February, the New Glasgow Library’s Saturday Family Movie Matinee on Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m. is Encanto, while the Antigonish Library will show Minions: The Rise of Gru on Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. There is a drop-in All things Valentine’s Day family fun event at the Westville Library on Feb. 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Discovery Centre will be at the Antigonish Library on Feb. 15 from 1:30 to 5 p.m. for an afternoon of interactive, all ages, drop-in programming exploring a Winter of Discovery. The Pictou Library is hosting a series of workshops with Jessie from Career Connections on Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. (interview skills on Feb. 8, resume writing on Feb. 15, and writing a cover letter on Feb. 22). The River John Library offers a series of Saturday workshops (10 a.m.), beginning with crafting with old books (Feb. 4), seed ordering (Feb. 11), and basic light fixture repairs (Feb. 18). The Trenton Library is hosting a writing workshop, Meet your Muse, on Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. There are daily treasure (or scavenger) hunts at our Stellarton, Trenton, Westville, Pictou and New Glasgow libraries. Please note, all locations of the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library will be closed on Feb. 20 in observance of Nova Scotia Heritage Day. Rita Joe, a Mi’kmaw poet from Eskasoni and We’koqma’q First Nations in Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island), will be recognized on Heritage Day 2023. We encourage you to discover the works of Joe, and many of her books may be found at the library.
