Town Council adopts ICSP

Pictou is one step closer to its mission to provide better water for the town. Town council officially adopted its Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) on March 8 at a special council meeting. Developing the plan is required under the Municipal Funding Agreement by municipalities to access gas tax funding for sustainable projects and upgrades. The town is scheduled to receive $665,000 in gas tax funding by March 31, 2010. Submitting the ICSP to the provincial government, the town could receive an additional $1 million between April 1, 2010, and March 31, 2011. The plan focuses on the town’s capital budget for the next five years. Environmental projects like improvements and infrastructure upgrades to the wastewater treatment system, storm sewers, water tower refurbishment and installation of water metres were the main areas of the plan. Mayor Joe Hawes said a preliminary copy of the plan has been viewed by the government for formatting issues and was sent back with no issues. Hawes said the plan will have to be submitted by March 31 to be eligible for further gas tax funding. The plan is available to view on the Town of Pictou’s website.
