The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets find themselves in dire straits this week.
The Weeks face the prospect of having to win every game in order to capture the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League championship against the Cole Harbour McCains.
That quest starts Thursday at the Dartmouth Sportsplex in the fifth game of their best-of-seven final series.
Pictou County must win that game in order to return the series back to New Glasgow for the sixth game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Should a seventh game be necessary, it will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sportsplex.
“We’ll see what we’re made of,” said Weeks assistant coach Rick Muise. “Cole Harbour hasn’t won four games yet.”
Cole Harbour took command of the series last weekend in New Glasgow by edging Pictou County 3-2 Saturday and 5-4 in overtime Sunday.
Garret Holmes gave Pictou County a 1-0 lead through one period, but the teams were tied 2-2 entering the third period.
John Harvey’s second and third goals of the game shot Cole Harbour into a 4-2 lead early in the third period, but Pictou County clawed back to tie the game on goals by Corey Bennett and Brent Turnbull.
Bennett also scored for the Weeks in the second period.
After a two-minute break following the third period, the teams began a 10-minute overtime period.
Cole Harbour won the game with 4:27 left in the period.
Cole Harbour took six of 10 penalties and outshot Pictou County 42-39.
“We made some mistakes, but we battled back,” Muise said.
Penalties cost Pictou County Saturday. The Weeks took six of nine penalties in the game, and Cole Harbour scored its three goals on the power play, including its first goal with a two-man advantage.
“We know Cole Harbour has a strong power play, but I thought we made good adjustments to it Sunday,” Muise said. “We know we can compete with them.”
After Cole Harbour took a 2-0 lead, Brent Turnbull got one of the goals back for Pictou County late in the first period.
Cole Harbour made it 3-1 in the second period, while Peter Topshee narrowed the gap for the Weeks in the third period.
Pictou County outshot Cole Harbour 45-29.
The Weeks advanced to the championship series with Cole Harbour after ousting the Cape Breton Tradesmen and the Halifax Lions.
