County basketball player named to all-rookie team

A former Pictou County resident has been named to an American university basketball league’s all-rookie team.
Bryson Johnson, 19, who grew up in Pictou County, was named to the all-rookie team in the Patriot League for the Bucknell Bisons, located in Lewisburg, Pa.
Johnson graduated from St. David Catholic Secondary School in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
The school boasts one of the top basketball programs in the province.
Johnson is considered a promising young guard who can play both the point and shooting positions.
In his first collegiate game, Johnson drained six shots from the three-point arc for 18 points to tie for the third highest total in the Bisons’ history.
Johnson entered last week with a team-high 62 three-pointers, three short of the school’s freshman record.
He is averaging 9.3 points per game with a game high output of 19 points and has started 11 games for the Bisons.
In his final two seasons at St. David, Johnson averaged nearly four three-points a game and collected an average of 20 points and seven rebounds per game.
Johnson was the school’s athlete of the year in 2007-08 when he led St. David to the provincial championship for the first time in 30 years.
He helped St. David to the provincial quarter-finals last season.
Johnson is the youngest in a family of athletes that includes his older brothers Ben and Nathan.
Their mother Peggy Johnson played basketball at Dalhousie University in Halifax and coached the boys’ hoop team at Northumberland Regional High School in Alma.
Ben is a junior guard at College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y., while Nathan played college basketball in Canada, including a stint with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
