The Pictou County Weeks Crushers have seized control of their hockey series with the Halifax Lions.
The Crushers entered this week with two chances to capture best-of-seven Bent Division semifinal series in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.
The sixth game of the series was scheduled to be played Tuesday in Halifax, while the Crushers will host the seventh game, if necessary, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in New Glasgow.
In Sunday’s game, the Crushers won the first home game of the series and took the series lead for the first time as they posted a convincing 7-2 triumph.
The Crushers blew the game open when they scored four goals and took 21 shots in the third period.
Goals by Sean Hoyt and Dan Joyce gave the Crushers a 2-1 lead, while Adam Chipman widened the lead to 3-1 in the second period.
Chipman started the Crushers’ four-goal barrage in the third period, followed by two goals by Mathieu Boudreau and Joyce’s second goal of the night.
The Crushers outshot Halifax 42-37.
The Lions won the previous two games in New Glasgow, including an 8-4 stunner in the series opener March 6 in New Glasgow.
The next three games were decided by one goal.
The Crushers answered twice with victories over the Lions, first in Halifax March 8, then in St. Margaret’s Bay last Friday when they levelled the series at two games apiece.
The Crushers needed Tyler Noseworthy’s second goal of the game in double overtime to edge Halifax 5-4 Friday.
Noseworthy and Chipman gave the Crushers a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Halifax scored a shorthanded goal just 27 seconds into the second period, while Scott McDonald gave the Crushers a 3-1 lead on the same power play.
The Lions got their second goal later in the second period and took a 4-3 lead with two goals in less than two minutes late in the third period.
The Crushers forced overtime when Hoyt scored a shorthanded goal with just eight seconds left in the third period.
The Crushers outshot Halifax 45-43 and had all three shots in the second overtime period.
The Crushers tied the series March 8 with a 3-2 victory over the Lions at the Halifax Forum.
After a scoreless first period, Chipman broke the ice for the Crushers in the second period.
Halifax took a 2-1 lead in the third period, but McDonald and Joyce tallied just 17 seconds apart later in the period to pull out the win.
In between the Crushers’ two victories, the Lions took a 2-1 lead in the series last Wednesday in New Glasgow with a 2-1 triumph.
There was no score after the first period, while Halifax took a 2-0 lead in the second period.
Ben Cameron’s point shot found the Lions’ net early in the third period, but the Crushers could not draw even despite a 21-14 edge in shots on goal.
The Crushers ended up outshooting Halifax 51-30.
The winner between the Crushers and Halifax will face the winner of the other Bent Division semifinal series between the Bridgewater Lumberjacks and the Truro Bearcats.
Avondale’s Brett Frazee opened the scoring for the Bearcats as they took a 3-2 lead in the series Friday in Truro with a 5-1 victory.
The sixth game was slated for Bridgewater Tuesday, while the seventh game, if necessary, will be played Thursday in Truro.
