BOND, Stanley Edward

BOND, Stanley Edward – 68, of Granton and formerly of Pictou, passed away September 3, 2010 in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Stanley F. and Mary J. (MacLean) Bond. Stanley was an avid hobby farmer and loved to give away his harvest every year. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and listening to classic country music. A dedicated blood donor, Stanley was recognized by The Red Cross for over 175 donations. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Ogden); children, Janice Bond, James (Eleanor) Bond, Joanne (Robert) MacCormack, Joyce (Dan) Rankin, Jason Bond; grandchildren, Johnathan, Keith, Kari, Josh, Justin, Kelsey, Dylan, Kylie, Danielle, Brandon, and Jordan; great grandchildren, Kaleb, Carter, and Summer; brothers and sisters, Sandy, Sadie Donnelly, his twin Henry, Angus, Anna May Clarke, Joe, Margie MacKean; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Helen; brother, Charlie. Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held in McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou. Burial will in the Stella Maris Parish Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

CONNOLLY, David Elroy

CONNOLLY, David Elroy – 82, of Rose Avenue, Trenton, passed away August 29, 2010, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Lester and Sadie (MacCallum) Connolly. David was a resident of Trenton since 1966. He served in the Canadian Army where he was a member of the 2nd Battalion Black Watch. He was a member of the former Calvary Temple now the Life Center in New Glasgow. He is survived by a son, David (Rebecca), Indian Harbour Lake; a daughter, Deborah (Daniel) Watson, Stellarton; a foster son, Stephen Connolly, New Glasgow; a chosen daughter, Wendy Lee (Dave) MacIntosh, New Glasgow; grandchildren: Andrew Connolly, Ottawa; Peter (Margaret) Connolly, Cold Lake, Alberta; Scott (Tammy) Watson, Columbia, South Carolina; Ryan (Kim) Watson, New Glasgow; Teia MacIntosh and Sharon MacIntosh, both of New Glasgow; two great-granddaughters, Yohanna Watson and Ainsley Connolly; brothers, Lee (Gasha), Truro; George (Rebecca), Truro; a sister, Ruth Connolly, Truro; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Marie (Jeans); sisters, Doreen in infancy and Gladys; brothers: Adam, Richard and Lloyd. Funeral service was held Sept. 3 from H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Trenton.

HUNTER, Harold Bray "Hal"

HUNTER, Harold Bray "Hal" – passed away peacefully August 31, 2010, with his family at his side in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on November 11, 1919 in New Glasgow, Harold was a son of the late Harry and Gertrude (Gillespie) Hunter. Harold attended schools in New Glasgow and participated in sports at a very young age. At age 17, in 1936, Hal's sports career began to flourish in Pictou County. From 1936-38, Hal's hockey career started in Junior Hockey playing "center ice" for both the British Consoles and New Glasgow High School teams. In 1938, Hal lead the Pictou Co. Jr. League for the most goals scored in that season. Playing the game was not enough for Hal so after finishing his junior career, he tried his hand at coaching the Traveling Bantam New Glasgow Little League Team. This lasted a few years before entering into the refereeing stage of hockey. He was seen at many games refereeing for the Commercial League of New Glasgow High School and the N.S. Senior Hockey League. Hockey may have been one of Hal's greatest passions, but baseball could not go without mention. Hal could be found on the "catcher's mound" in the summers for three teams: Blue Sunacos, New Glasgow Junior Baseball and Pictou Co. Juniors. After finishing his junior career, he moved into senior baseball where he took on the new position of short stop. It was during 1939-41 that Hal played in the Pictou Co. Twilight League for three separate teams: New Glasgow, Pictou Regals and the Westville Minors. It was during this time that Hall played short stop for the Trenton Scotian softball team. Once his senior ball years came to an end, Hal thought baseball might be over for him. However, in 1946, while working in Aylmer, Ont., he played for the Aylmer Baseball Team for a year. Upon returning to New Glasgow in the early 1950s, Hal coached the New Glasgow Senior Baseball team. Once his hockey and baseball years came to an end, Hal found other sports interests. He played in the Main Street Bowling League in New Glasgow for many years. He was a member of the Abercrombie Golf Club for the past 50 years and, from 1967-1994 was a member of the Abercrombie Bluenose Curling Club. For the past few years, Hal continued to enjoy sports on TV. He was recently inducted into the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 34 New Glasgow. Hal was employed at Hawker Siddeley for 35 years as a store keeper. Hal was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan (Warren) Hunter; baby daughter, Joanne; brother, Douglas Hunter; sister, Jean Brown; brother-in-law, Murray Brown; daughter-in-law, Marina, (Waite) Hunter. Hal is survived by son, Dale Hunter, Fredericton; loving grandchildren: Jennifer Hunter and Christopher Hunter, Toronto; son, Dana (Patti) Hunter, Truro; grandchildren: Lisa (Glen Jennings), Truro; Melissa Hunter and Matthew Hunter, Halifax; great-granddaughter, Amy Beth; sisters-in-law, Lorna Hunter, New Glasgow; Louise Adams, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special friends: Harry Atwater, John Munroe, Jim and Anne Callaghan, Jan Bezanson, Dr. Barclay and Debbie MacKenzie. Funeral was Sept. 3 in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.

LIVINGSTONE, June Agnes

LIVINGSTONE, June Agnes – 84, Riverton, formerly of Brother Street, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully September 1, 2010 at Valley View Villa surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Stellarton, she was the last surviving child of the late Andrew and Frances M. (Flemming) Fraser. She was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, New Glasgow. Surviving are her devoted husband of 64 years, John S. Livingstone; loving daughters, Dianne (Sandy) Kellock, Plymouth; Elizabeth "Liz" Dupuis, Westville; Andrea MacLeod, New Glasgow; she was nanny to grandchildren: Rand Kellock, Calgary, Alta.; Mary MacLeod, Salem; Melissa MacLeod, Pirates Harbour; Jeanette (Brad) Rector, Westville; Rachel MacLeod, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Riley , Lauren and their mom, Tracy (Miller) Kellock, Micaela DeCoste and Joshua Rector; nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Billy, John "Brickey", Duncan and Donald; sisters, Bridgie Turnbull and Casmir "Cas" Shipley; oldest grandchild, Harley Kellock (November 14, 2009); son-in-law, Gordon MacLeod. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service was held Sept. 5 from in P. and K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Interment in Abercrombie Cemetery.

MacCALLUM, Carl Aubrey

MacCALLUM, Carl Aubrey – 83, of Pictou, and formerly of Pictou Island, passed away September 1, 2010, in the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou. Born on Pictou Island, he was a son of the late Ward and Dolina (MacLean) MacCallum. Carl was a farmer and will be remembered for his perseverance, insisting on working alone as his health declined and mobility diminished. He is survived by a sister, Lois MacLean, Pictou; nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by sisters, Ona Glover, Isabel MacMillan; and brother, Andy MacCallum. Funeral service was held Sept. 3 from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou. Burial in Seaview Cemetery.

MURPHY, Frank Edward

MURPHY, Frank Edward – 59, of Elliott Street, Pictou, passed away suddenly at home on September 1, 2010. Born in Pictou, he was a son of Lester Murphy of Pictou, and the late Laura (Belleville) Murphy. He had worked at the Pictou Shipyard but was a longtime employee of Trenton Works. He was also an Associate Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou. Frank is survived by his son, Ben Murphy, New Glasgow; daughter, Angela (Dan) Burns, and granddaughter, Chloe Burns, Westville; special friend, Barb Richards, Pictou; brothers and sisters, James (Linda), Jane (Gary) Muir, June (Ray) Rankin, Betty (Rick) MacDonald, all of Pictou; Dale (Darlene), Somerset, NS; Margo Murphy (Malcolm Halliday), Stellarton; Laureen (Bob) MacDonald, Ron (Tanya), Lyons Brook; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his mother he was predeceased by an infant son, Frank; nephews, Jason and Sean. Funeral was held Sept. 6 from St. James Anglican Church, Pictou. Cremation then took place with burial at a later date in Seaview Cemetery.
