BROWN (Thompson), Edna - 93, River John, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Edna was born in New Glasgow, a daughter of the late James and Jessie (Heighton) Thompson. She worked in various fish processing plants. Edna loved bingo and cards, she enjoyed hooking rugs. She is survived by sisters, Marjorie Hicks, Castle Manor, Moncton; Darlene (Lionel) Duplessis, River John; brother, Seward Thompson, Northwood Manor, Halifax; grandsons, Robert "Mickey" (Paulette) Brown, River John; Bruce (Debbie) Benjamin, River John; granddaughter, Suzanne Benjamin, British Columbia; sisters-in-law, Bernice Thompson, Annie Brown; brother-in-law, Anderson MacLean; son-in-law, Keith Benjamin; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Megan Benjamin, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Bill; daughter, Wanda Benjamin; grandson, Marty Benjamin; sister, Joyce MacLean; brothers, Johnny, Chester, Lloyd, and Percy. Visitation: Wednesday, May 7, 7-9 p.m. in MacLeod's Funeral Home, River John. Funeral service: Thursday, May 8, 2 p.m. in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, River John, with Rev. CARMICHAEL, Elmer

CARMICHAEL, Elmer - 77, Hillside, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital New Glasgow. He was born in New Glasgow on March 4, 1931. For a number of years, he worked for Reid's Grocery, Hillside, and then with his partner, Allister MacDonald, they bought the business, operating under the name Carmichael and MacDonald. Later, he was employed by the Municipality of Pictou County Public Works from where he retired. He was well-known throughout the county as a house painter and for operating a boarding house. He was an avid card player and enjoyed travelling. He is survived by the MacDonald family, Allister (Coleen); Michael (Samantha), Hayley, Dominic, Caden; Mary-Beth (Stefan) Atzema. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A public graveside committal service for family and friends, 11 a.m. Wednesday May 7 in Hillside Cemetery with Rev. Debra Orton officiating. Reception in Hillside Hall. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hillside Hall Memorial Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton.

CURLEY, Walter Alexander, Sr.

CURLEY, Walter Alexander, Sr. - 72, New Glasgow, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, with his wife by his side. Born in Clermont, P.E.I., on February 8, 1936, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Florence (MacNeill) Curley. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow. He was employed for 10 years with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Prior to retirement in 2001, he was employed as Secretary Treasurer with W. A. O'Farrell Chev-Olds Ltd., New Glasgow, for 34 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Lillian (White); daughters, Cynthia "Cindy" Curley (Peter Furhovde), Calgary, Alta.; Carol (Mike) Hatfield, Coalburn; Gail (Clinton) Jewell, New Glasgow; Maureen (Kelvin) Cooke, Hammonds Plains; sons, Walter Jr. (Joy) Curley, New Glasgow; Gavin Curley (Tamara Smith), New Westminster, B.C.; grandchildren, Carolyn and Charlene Aikens, Wayne and Jeffrey Cameron, Nicole Hatfield, CJ, Keigan and Clerissa Jewell, Ashley and Mason Cooke, Walter Curley III; sister, Frances Pepper, Vancouver, B.C.; brother, Alvin (Marion) Curley, New Annan, P.E.I.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Florence and Alice in infancy, Zelma Borhaven, Glenn Chafe, Jean Creed and Paula Shotton; brothers, Leland and Gavin. Visitation: 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 5 in P. and K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6 in St. John the Baptist Parish with Father Donald Boudreau presiding. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, New Glasgow. HEMMINGS, Doris N.

HEMMINGS, Doris N. - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Norma Hemmings, Pictou, on May 3, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born August 30, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Eva Noel. She had worked at Hamilton's Biscuits, and was a former member of the Pictou Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Doris will be greatly missed by her husband, Harold; son, Joey (Sandra), and beloved granddaughter, Shelby. She is also survived by sister, Margie (George) Carpenter, Ontario; brothers, Edward (Barb), Joey (Janice), Harry Noel, all of Pictou, and Harold, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. Doris will be greatly missed by everyone. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Rose Noel and Theresa Charlton. Cremation has taken place. Visitation: Tuesday, May 6 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. HILTZ (Bezanson), Mary Jean - 98, River John, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2008, in Willow Lodge, with her daughter by her side. Mary was born on April 4, 1910, in Dalhousie Mountain, and was the last surviving child of the late Daniel and Margaret (Lynds) Bezanson. She is survived by her daughter, Anita (Kenneth) Clarke, River John; granddaughters, Kenda Gamble (Glen Breen), Edmonton, Alta.; Melody (Peter) Murphy, Saint John, N.B.; Leanne (Cory) Cyr, Dartmouth; great-grandchildren, Randy Gamble, India; Nile and Chloe Cyr, Agnes and Leo Murphy; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Wade (1966); son, Charles (1984); sisters, Cassie Gregory, Margaret "Libby" Fraser, Annie Holt; brothers, George, William, David, Raymond, Stewart and James. Visitation: Monday, May 5 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral: Tuesday, May 6, 2 p.m., both in St. George's Presbyterian Church, River John. Interment in Mountain Road Cemetery. PALMER, Mary Jane - 94, Riverton, Pictou Co., passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Union Centre, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Catherine (Fraser) Gauneau. She is survived by daughter, Edwina Baker (Les), Dundalk, Ont.; son, Arthur (Pat), Durham Bridge, N.B.; chosen son, James Williams, Riverton; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William "Bill" Palmer; sons, Harold and Raymond Palmer; sisters, Yvonne Adams, Barbara Hale, Margaret Haight, and Beatrice Johnstone; brothers, Isadore, Joseph, Albert, Alden and Henry Garneau; two grandchildren. WORKS, Howard Kenneth

WORKS, Howard Kenneth - 53, of Scotia Street, Trenton, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of Dorothy (Pentz) and the late Howard Works. Howard worked for over 20 years at Trenton Works as a welder. He was also an accomplished carpenter. He enjoyed spending time in Lochaber as well as hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family at outings and barbeques. His family was always very important to him, always putting their needs before his own. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, the former Elva Kenny; daughter, Stephanie (Ken) Harris, Westville; sons, Howie (Donna Nauggle), Alma; their children, Brandon, Jennifer, and Brittany; Christopher (Danielle Reid), Alberta; sisters, Linda (Robert) White, Stellarton; Laureen (Robert) Livingstone, New Glasgow; Beverly Works, Stellarton; Marie (Dale) Mac-Leod, Greenhill; brother, Brian (Cathy), Vancouver. Visitation: 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 4 in H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, May 5 in H.W. Angus Funeral Home with Father Don Boudreau officiating. Burial in Christ The King Cemetery. Donations in memory of Howard may be made to the family. He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends, and special friend, Lucky.
