ARBUCKLE, John Ross

ARBUCKLE, John Ross – 85, Hartford, Conn., passed away August 23, 2010, with his family by his side. Born in Merigomish, Pictou County in 1924, he was the son of the late Irving and Bertha (Austin) Arbuckle. He attended school in Sutherland's River and later was employed locally four several years. In 1944 he enlisted in the army and served in France, Germany and Holland. He moved to the United States in the early 50s, first to Providence, Rhode Island and later to Hartford, where he resided for 53 years. He was employed by Finast Bakery for many years, retiring several years ago. He was a member of Sphinx Shriners, Newington, a 32 Degree Mason, a 60 year member of the Masonic Hudson Lodge 77, Thorburn, and a Sequin Level Lodge #140 Newington. Besides his wife Maura, Ross leaves two daughters, Peggy Talty (John Kesato) and Joanne (Michael Hunt), Glendale, Calif.; also five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Charles, Mahone Bay; and a sister, Audrey Gunn, New Glasgow. He was predeceased by a daughter, Rita Talty (Gagne); brothers, Earl (Vida) and Ralph (Rena); sisters, Kay (Clarence) Arthur and Mildred (Alex) Homes. Funeral service was held August 26 at Sheehan-Hillborn-Breen Funereal Home, West Hartford.

DAVIS, Isabel Margaret

DAVIS, Isabel Margaret – RN, 92, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Stellarton, New Glasgow and Green Hill, passed away August 22, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Winfield Stuart and Mary Margaret (Harris) Robertson. She graduated from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in 1940 and had been a community and private duty nurse for many years. Prior to retirement in 1983, she had been a day supervisor at Glen Haven Manor for 10 years. She was a member of Greenhill-Alma United Church and the Aberdeen School of Nursing Alumni. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, sewing, swimming and treasured time spent with her family. Surviving are her daughters, Myrna MacLeod, Stellarton; Edith Davis, Halifax; son-in-law, Ralph Arbuckle, Green Hill; grandchildren: Capt. Alan (Lizon) Arbuckle, Greenwood; Kevin (Tracy) Arbuckle, Halifax; Tracey (Murray) MacDonald, Woodburn; Neil MacLeod (Leslie), Westville; great-grandchildren: Nia, Niobe, Kayden, Jaylee, Lindsey, Landen and Eli; nieces, Mary (Chuck) MacKinnon, Sandra (Steven) Cameron, Lwr. Barney's River. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Whitman Davis; daughter, Winnie Arbuckle; brother, Alexander. Funeral service was held Aug. 25 from P. and K. MacDonald Funeral Home chapel. Interment in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.

HOOD, James Paul "Jim"

HOOD, James Paul "Jim" – 72, of Stellarton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 30, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Elgin, Pictou County, he was the son of the late John and Pearl (Kay) Hood. Jim spent his early years in Elgin before moving to Stellarton where he resided for the past 46 years. He was a well known and respected car salesman for 41 years retiring in 2002. Jim's community involvement was wide spread as he served as Town Councillor in Ward 2 in Stellarton 1987-1997 having served on numerous committees, notably as chair of Stellarton Homecoming Festival for many years. He was a member of the Stellarton Police Commission and Nova Scotia Social Services Commission, serving as chair of both. Jim was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, serving as Clerk of Session, an Elder and was a former Superintendent of the Sunday School. A 50 year member of Caledonia Lodge #28, IOOF, Hopewell, and served as Grand Master of the Atlantic Provinces IOOF 1984-1985. He was honored with the Grand Decoration of Chivalry, the highest IOOF honor. A member of the Silver Light Rebekah Lodge #79, Hopewell. Also a member of Waabek Encampment and was a Past Grand Patriarch of the Atlantic Provinces. A member of Canton Dryden, Patriarch's Militant and a Past Department Commander of the Atlantic Provinces. Jim was a member of the Keith Masonic Lodge #23, Stellarton, and was a Past Master, District Deputy Grand Master and Secretary. A member of Philae Temple and was Pictou County Shrine Club Vice-President. A member of Westville Chapter #24, Order of the Eastern Star. Past President of the Pictou Centre Progressive Conservative Association and was recently appointed as Honourary President. Jim was a member of the executive of the Central Nova Conservative Association. Jim is survived by his wife of 46 years the former Henrietta Munro; children: Barbara (Jamie) Foote, Fall River; David (Amy) Hood, Stellarton; grandchildren: Allison, Brennan and Euan Hood, Jacob Foote; sister, Betty (Robert) Young, Hopewell; brother-in-law, Albert (Evie) Munro, Westville; nephews: Allen (Carolyn), Kevin (Lena) and Andrew (Cathy) Fraser; niece, Wendy Munro; cousin, Eveline MacLeod. He was predeceased by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Albert and Margaret Munro; brother-in-law, Fred Fraser. His remains will rest in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home for visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, Sept. 1. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Interment will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Hopewell.

LINTHORNE, James "Bo"

LINTHORNE, James "Bo" – 69, of Foster Avenue, Stellarton, passed away August 23, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of Helen (MacNeil) Linthorne Geddes and the late Walter Linthorne. Bo was a lifelong resident of Stellarton where he served as a town councillor since 2008. He worked as a Coal Miner at the McBean Mine in Thorburn and was later employed at the former Trenton Works from where he retired. Bo enjoyed playing horseshoes, camping, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his companion, Donna Hughes, Stellarton; a daughter Kimberly Hughes, Westville; a son Jimmy Linthorne, Westville; granddaughters: Krystal, Nicole, Taylor and Grumpy will be missed by his special girl Avery, a great-grandson, Landon; brothers, Joe (Jean), Stellarton; Brian (Tammy), Stellarton; Pete, Stellarton; Daryl (Connie) Bridgeville; a sister, Helen (Steven) Doucette, Hopewell; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Walter Linthorne; brothers, Bernie and Wallace; and step-father Eldred Geddes. A memorial service was held Aug. 27 in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Burial of ashes in the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin.

MARTIN, Madeline

MARTIN, Madeline – 70, of Little Harbour, passed away August 27, 2010, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a long battle with breast cancer. Born in Pictou Landing First Nation, Madeline was the daughter of the late Agnes (nee Nicholas) Prosper. Madeline was a member of the Pictou Landing First Nation. She was an award winning artist, enjoyed painting and ceramic art, but may be most known for making handmade wooden flowers, a traditional Mi'kmaq art. Her flowers are enjoyed by families all over the world. She is survived by her husband, Noel Martin, Little Harbour; children: Debbie (Arnold), Black Point; Dwayne (Leanne), Masstown; Paul Martin and Sherri Martin, Little Harbour; Donna (Paul), Halifax; eight grandchildren: Andrea (David), Ottawa; Janna (Trevor), New Glasgow; Pieter (Katelyn), Black Point; Christena, Black Point; Matthew, Masstown; Brandon, Masstown; Chris, Halifax; Marisa, Trenton; Brett, Trenton; siblings: John (Barbara) Prosper, Pictou Landing; Caroline Martin, Pictou Landing; Margaret Prosper, Pictou Landing; Freda Fraser, Pictou Landing; Cyril Prosper, Pictou Landing; several nieces, nephews and godchildren. She was predeceased by siblings: Henry Prosper, Arthur Prosper, Audrey Denny, Joseph Prosper and Stanley Propser, all of Pictou Landing. Funeral service was August 30 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Pictou Landing First Nation.

MORRISON, Gertrude Edith

MORRISON, Gertrude Edith – 92, of Halifax, passed away August 26, 2010, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax Infirmary Site. Born in Pictou, she was a daughter of the late George and Edith Morrison. She is survived by her daughters, Heather, Richmond Hill, Ont.; Sue, Halifax; and sons, Joseph, Barrie, Ont.; Michael, Halifax; Bruce, Halifax; and brother, Ellie, Pictou. Her husband Alex passed away in 1987. She was predeceased by her brothers, Oak, Lester, Cars; and sisters, Glad, Lot, and Jess. A private family service was held August 30 from McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou.

SMEES, Gerrit

SMEES, Gerrit – 80, of Lorne, Pictou County, passed away August 20, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit surrounded by his loving family. Born in Aalten, Holland, he was a son of the late Johan Hendrik and Drika Hermina (Doornink) Smees. From 1953-1983 Gerrit owned and operated Crown Dairy Farm in Lorne. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stellarton and a former Elder and Deacon of the former Christian Reformed Church in New Glasgow where he sang with the choir and the church quartet. Gerrit enjoyed playing the harmonica and accordion and listening to gospel song services. He is survived by his wife the former Dina Johanna Heusinkveld, Lorne; daughter Innie (Walter) Dykstra, Hopewell; Opa to Kevin and Janet, Trevor and Rebecca, Derek and Nichole, son, Henry (Grace) Smees, Hamilton; Opa to Lisa, Rhonda and Kyle and Nathan, son John (Nelly) Smees, Lorne; Opa to Travis and Jennifer, Amanda and Brennan, Ashley and Shane, daughter Ria (Don) MacDonald, Trenton; Opa to Jonathan, Angela and Brody, Ariel, a son Eric (Darlene) Smees, Lorne; Opa to Kirsten and Samantha. Also Opa to his great-grandchildren: Zachary and Kyle Dykstra, Chloe and Lily Dykstra, Sydney Smees, Alana Peck, Ryan Loranger and Hailey MacKenzie, a brother Jan, Damwolde, Holland; sisters, Dora, Pictou and Hattie, Oraville, Washington; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Sina and Grada. Funeral service was held Aug. 24 from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton. Burial in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.

TAYLOR, Brenton Alexander

TAYLOR, Brenton Alexander – 92, Plymouth Park, Pictou County, passed away peacefully with his loving daughter by his side, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building on August 25, 2010. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late William and Bessie (Davidson) Taylor. Brent lived a full life and enjoyed a very active time of residency at Camp Hill for seven years. He served overseas with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. Upon his return to Canada after World War II, he worked at Hawker Siddeley in Trenton until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, a member of Fuller Lodge IOOF, Stellarton, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Stellarton Branch. He was an avid hunter, woodworker, fisherman, and gardener. He was especially proud of his dahlias, which he grew at his home and later transferred to his own flower bed at the Veterans' Garden. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Daniel) MacLeod, Hammonds Plains; grandchildren, Marla and Matthew; sisters, Zela Fairhurst, Westville, and Ethel Gordon, U.S.A. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Alwyn (Thomas); several brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place.

WHITE, J. William "Billy"

WHITE, J. William "Billy" – Cottage Street, Pictou, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2010, with family at his side in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. He was 93. Born in Abney, P.E.I. in 1917, he was a son of the late William and Harriet (Roberts) White. The last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by brothers, Herman, Ray, Oliver; and sisters, Mildred, Lucy, Minnie, Annie, and Eva. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ellen (Munn) White; and many nieces and nephews. Billy moved to Pictou in 1958 where he was employed by Northumberland Ferries for 26 years, previously having worked in Hamilton, Ont. He also fished and farmed on P.E.I. His hobbies were woodworking, gardening, and being a ‘jack of all trades’. He enjoyed boxing, wrestling, and hockey. Billy loved children and everywhere he and Ellen lived, the children of the neighbourhood were always around. Funeral service will be today, September 1, at 2 p.m., from Pictou United Church, with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Burial at a later date in Murray River Cemetery, PEI.
