Bransfield, Hicks win awards at steel shoot tournament

Posted on October 10, 2012

STILLWATER – Shooters are getting ready for the annual Nov 4 the annual turkey fun shoot that will begin at 9 a.m. on Nov. 4 at the DNR shooting range at Stillwater, Guysborough County.
The event features paper turkey targets at 100 yards that have hidden stickers to determine the prize. Frozen turkeys and chickens are the prizes.
John Day at 783-2820 or Larry Sutherland at 328-2494 can be contacted for more information.
The shoot follows two events that took place last weekend: a hunter safety course that took place Saturday at the Stillwater Community Centre and a 50 and 100 yard 22 rifle target shoot Sunday at the range.
John Bransfield of New Glasgow and Don Hicks of Harris Road, near Pictou, were among shooters at a well attended 25 and 50 yard steel shoot last month at the range.
Members, both new and seasoned, threw down the gauntlet for some good-natured rivalry with scoped and open sighted rim fire rifles and rim and center fire handguns.
Bransfield needed three tie-breakers to defeated Lloyd Ralph of Sherbrooke in the long rifle 22 open sight division.
The second big contest test came when Allen MacHattie and Bransfield went toe to toe in the 22 handgun division. Bransfield won, MacHattie placed second and Holger Schmidt of Sonora was third.
Hicks was second in the high-powered handgun division won by Roger Porter of Antigonish Harbour.
The association’s annual general meeting took place Sept. 9, while a firearm safety course took place at the community centre on Sept. 16.
