Seats for Schools program unveiled

Posted on February 22, 2012

The Pictou County Wellness Centre Community Campaign team recently unveiled their ‘Seats for Schools’ program aimed at recognizing students and schools in Pictou County for participating in and promoting healthy initiatives.
To qualify to have their name on a seat, schools must participate or organize an activity that educates and engages people or promotes health and wellness in their school or community or that supports a third-party healthy initiative, for example, Jump Rope for Heart.
“This is a natural fit for both the campaign and the schools,” said Gerald Green, Wellness Centre Campaign member and seat sale chair. “We wanted to offer something to the schools that encourages health and wellness and recognizes the efforts that our schools currently engage in.”
Activities for which schools can receive recognition could be a new program or initiative, or it could be something they already have planned. “We didn’t want to undermine the efforts already underway in many of our schools or create more work for our teachers and principals. What we want is to highlight and recognize those efforts in a meaningful way,” said Green.
The plan was received positively at the Chignecto-Central Regional Celtic Family School Board principals’ meeting.
“To me this is a win-win situation,” said Lynn MacLean, Celtic Family of Schools supervisor. “It’s a great way to involve the school community and highlight the amazing initiatives that our teachers, principals and children engage in to promote health and wellness. It’s a great way to have our youth in the community excited about what this centre will mean to them and to leave a legacy.”
Schools will be encouraged to capture their events and initiatives which will then be shared and promoted through the campaign team. A section of seats has been set aside for this initiative, with up to three seats available to each school.
