NEW GLASGOW – The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s library services is initiating a teen reader’s choice award.
The new award program invited students in Grades 7 to 12 to nominate their favourite book for the award, read the top 10 nominated books, and then vote for their favourite in the top 10 to be recognized as the 2011-12 CCRSB teen reader’s choice award.
The 10 finalists were determined and announced Feb. 14. They include Crank by Ellen Hopkins, Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
“The new program celebrates reading for pleasure and encourages students to have conversations about books and reading,” says Jolene Shaw, CCRSB’s library services manager. “It really builds on the success of the Hackmatack Children’s Choice book awards, which is open to students in Grades 4 to 6 across the school board.”
Students could nominate any book for the CCRSB award: any genre, any publication date, any origin, and any format.
Between Feb. 14 and May 13, students are being encouraged to read a nominated book and discuss it in school and online at http://ccrsbteenchoice.wordpress.com.
From April 25 to May 14, students will vote for their favourite top 10 book, and the 2011-12 regional award winning book will be announced at the end of May.
