New transit study a waste of funds

Posted on February 22, 2012

To the Editor:
It is disturbing and insulting to members of an ad hoc committee, which conducted an exhaustive study on Public Transportation in Pictou County over a four year period, that the majority of Pictou County Municipalities solicited proposals and awarded a contract to study this service once again.
The original study involved all sectors of the community from industry to health to call centers to educational facilities and beyond. It involved communication with King’s Transit, HRM Transit and Strait Transit to name a few. A detailed analysis of capital and operational costs was prepared and presented to all councils and municipal units as well as a joint meeting of Mayors, Warden and CAOs.
Other priorities took precedence at that time over transit and the municipal units could not support or afford the proposal. However, if transit is now a priority I am sure the details can be reviewed, but why are we wasting the tax payer’s money on a feasibility study that has already been done by concerned community leaders and volunteers at no cost to the tax payer?
