The Samson Trail is moving full speed ahead in the race for Greatest Places in Canada.
The former train track turned fitness trail was sitting at 352 votes as of Friday and the Town of New Glasgow is asking for your help in pushing it to the number one spot in Canada.
Voting takes place online at http://www.cip-icu.ca/greatplaces/en/place or via the Town of New Glasgow Facebook page and voting can take place once a day from each computer. The winner receives ViaRail travel passes, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Roots gift cards as well as a feature article in Up! magazine.
“The word is spreading and I believe it is directly related with the stories in the local media and on the social media sites,” says Kim Dickson, director of marketing and communications.
“The more information there is out there, the more votes the Samson Trail seems to be getting.”
Voting takes place until February 29, “so there’s lots of time to cast your votes,” she says.
“We are pleased with the attention it has brought to the trail because it means the people are becoming more aware of it and are supporting the trail with each new vote we receive. It’s encouraging to see the support grow when we are up against such other beautiful spaces across the country.”
Voters on the site are also encouraged to share their words of fondness for the trail, which local wood carver Albert Farthing did, stating “One of my very favourite biking routes in the whole of Canada — it is extraordinary, and deserves much wider recognition for its multi-sided values.”
MP for Central Nova Peter MacKay also referenced the Samson Trail on his regular report on East Coast FM which Dickson says is another example of community pride and support.
Dickson says, “It’s about pride of our place promoting tourism to our area. The Samson Trail is one of our treasures and being part of this allows us to share that with the rest of Canada while also helping to promote the best parts of our country to other parts of the world.”
