To the Editor:
…and now to the distaff side.
Being in favour of a study on governance is like being on the side of the angels. The Town Fathers of Pictou have clearly opted to side with the celestial cohort and for this I applaud them.
Now let us look at the possible fallout from that expressed choice. The first positive for the Town Fathers is that they now have a ready answer for any questions arising on the subject of governance by simply stating they are awaiting the findings of the proposed study.
Questions and answers: When will the study take place? What are the terms of reference? Who will conduct the study? When will the study be completed? Who will receive the study upon its completion? When will the various town councils of Pictou County reflect on the findings and suggestions of the study? When, if ever, might we the taxpayers of the county be allowed to share in the insights brought forth by the study? When, if ever, may we expect practical application of the recommendations of the study?
The answers to all these questions are shrouded in the murky shadows of bureaucratic obscurity. The proposed study now becomes sacrosanct and must not be subject to plebian questioning.
I am more convinced that now is the time to move to the distaff side of the community for direction and guidance. It is time we had at least two or more women on town council. We need a couple of strong insightful women to shape the town council into a forward thinking, effective body. We need people who can think outside the box.
It is my suggestion to the women of the Town of Pictou to look for a number of potential female candidates for town council. Encourage these ladies to run in the forthcoming elections. Support them in their bid for election.
It is long past the time for the ‘old boys club’ to have some viable opposition.
