A fire Tuesday morning has caused extensive damage to Nova Forge in Trenton.
The fire started at 8:33 a.m. in the forge building, in the pump room at the rear of the building, says Const. Ken MacDonald, New Glasgow Police.
“All persons were accounted for and there were no serious injuries,” he says.
It quickly engulfed the building.
General Manager Rob MacEachern says, “Until we can enter and assess the damage, it’s too early to determine the extent of the damages. We don’t anticipate any immediate layoffs as we work to restart operations.”
Nova Forge employs 26 people, 18 of which were working at the time of the blaze.
Workers were sent home while firefighters fought the blaze which shot flames 100 metres into the air. Black smoke was visible for miles around.
The fire was considered under control at press time early Tuesday afternoon. Its cause had not been determined.
Nova Forge is a sister company of Forged products Inc. in Houston, Texas.
It was previously known as TrentonWorks Forge and specialized in custom forgings that were shipped out of Halifax.
First responders on the scene were New Glasgow Police and firefighters from Trenton, New Glasgow and Abercrombie departments.
MacEachern says, “We really appreciate the employees and the fire departments for their rapid response. They did a wonderful job.” He commended the employes for the “responsible and orderly manner” of evacuation.
